Over 150 oils representing 19 different producing horizons were analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC). This analytical methodology combines the results from standard chromatographic fingerprints with high resolution light hydrocarbon analysis. The light hydrocarbons have been shown to be particularly effective in assessing oil types in the Williston Basin. In addition a select set of source rock light hydrocarbon data are included to demonstrate correlation between effective source rocks and oils. Selected samples were also analyzed to assess saturate and aromatic fraction biomarkers

This is a research quality assessment and provides an economical approach to understanding petroleum systems in the Williston Basin and elsewhere in the world using light hydrocarbon and biomarker data. With these data and an unknown oil, the source of the oil can be ascertained. Also, generation temperatures and oil maturity can be evaluated to understand generation thresholds. Commingled production can be evaluated using oil mixing techniques
