Williston Basin Source Rock and Oil Study


Various wells across the Williston Basin were evaluated to assess the source potential of various horizons that have not been evaluated in other studies. The source potential of the Ratcliffe, Mission Canyon, Lodgepole, and Bakken formations are reported with emphasis on the Lodgepole Formation. Approximately 550 hand-picked samples from core and select well cuttings from 79 wells were sampled and analyzed see data and location map. Most of these sample were located outside the fairway of mature, underlying Bakken shale. Total organic carbon (TOC) and Rock-Eval analyses were performed on all samples with select samples analyzed to obtain chromatographic fingerprints and biomarker evaluations for further maturity assessment and correlation purposes.

Eleven oil samples from Ratcliffe, Mission Canyon, Lodgepole including carbonate mound discoveries, Bakken, and Red River formations were included for correlation to potential source rocks.
